Bim Angst
Bim Angst likes pushing paint around, loves paper, and enjoys picking up objects she finds on walks with her dogs. Combining those interests with the self-directed time created by retirement (from teaching required college writing courses) led Angst to expand her long interest in drawing into playing around with other forms of visual arts, with varied forms of printing her chief experiential art interest. Exploration of media, surfaces, and objects has resulted in Angst's development of a watercolor printing technique for botanicals, feathers, and other objects she forages, with each print one-of-a-kind, most often rendered in vivid color not natural to the object, which participates directly in the making of the image. The resulting print throws the object into closer and often surprising consideration–which, for Angst, is the chief joy of making prints.
For Angst, collage and assemblage also appeal, the pleasure being chiefly in using what's available, especially "street trinkets" and trash, in the construction of something unexpected and maybe more than a little funky. While Angst continues to write (mostly fiction–she has an MFA in creative writing from Bowling Green State University), she thinks of her practice of visual art as a way of more deeply and differently engaging with the world than words allow. As a member of the Walk In Art Center Artist Collective, Angst is expanding her interests to including fiber arts and clay.
